History of Chegg India
In October 2000, Josh Carlson and Mike Seager, along with Mark Fiddleke, started Chegg’s predecessor, Cheggpost. It was a Craigslist-style chat room for Iowa State students. The name “Chegg” is a combination of chicken and egg, which reflects the founders’ dilemma of not being able to find a job without experience and not being able to get experience without a job.
Carlson and Mike Seager then teamed up with Iowa State MBA Osman Rashid. Rashid was a fan of the site and saw that it had the potential to revolutionize the textbook market which had “drastically increased at a faster rate than inflation.”
The company was incorporated in December 2005 by Carlson and Rashid, along with Anand Phumbhra. It offered scholarship search, internship matching, and college application advice at the time. Some of the initial funding came from Rashid.
After leaving the company in February 2006, Carlson and Phumbhra rebranded it to Chegg, Inc., with Rashid as the CEO.
